Making Work Spaces WORK

If you've ever come across the work place of Google (the Sweden office) then you have probably felt the envy and longing of wishing companies like that existed everywhere... if you have not ever seen pictures I suggest you check it out!

It makes me wonder if a company goes to such extreme measures to ensure the comfort and happiness of their employees would it not bring a HUGE benefit? (DUH - if I could get a massage AT WORK everyday I would never call in sick!!) and therefore would it not create a team of more dedicated and efficient workers?
And not only the amazing features you as an employee would be offered but even the offices themselves are a big switch from the dreary and drab that most of us are used to.

If I could have a dream office it would be an unexpected space filled with charm, inspiration and comfort!

Something like this darling picture above!!

Another lovely office space.

I think an office should be bold... it should kick start you everyday to release your inspiration and make you feel "at home". I believe your space determines your attitude/emotions, if you can create a space that allows you to feel serene and also gets you motivated then you've achieved perfection!

Of course not all of us have the luxury of a complete make-over to our offices (or for most of us - cubicles) but there are some smaller scale things you can do to create a big impact.

1. Organize - If you're space is not organized YOU will not be organized. Once everything has it's own place you will notice you feel calmer and less agitated which in turn will help you be more efficient!

2. Bring in comforts - whether it's a few pictures of loved ones or friends, or just a place you LOVE being, frame it and give it a spot. (IKEA has some neat Art Cards you can frame as well!)

3. Use unconventional pieces - you can dress up and transform your area by bringing in pretty decor and using them for something other than their designated use. Think small vases for a pencil holder (IKEA has a great selection for this) Baskets to organize your Inbox/Outbox instead of the plastic trays.

4. Bring in a plant - plants are great, especially if you are in a high rise (due to the recycled air systems) as they help generate oxygen and in a stuffy office that's a wonderful thing! For those of you who don't have green thumbs (I do not...) bamboo is a great option as it's very low maitenance!

5. Be crafy! - If you feel your inner Martha Stewart wanting to come out get a piece of coark board (from any hardware store) cut to whatever size you desire and cover it with a patterned wall paper to liven it up a bit - it will instantly become a peice of art as well as a functional memo board!

Take a few small steps and voila - your offie oasis awaits!
